The Government College of Engineering (GCE) in Bargur, India, is one of the premier and youngest engineering college in Tamil Nadu. Government College of Engineering, Bargur has secured 7th rank among 243 affiliated colleges as per anna university ranking. Growth and Commitment towards Excellence (GCE) is the main motto of the college.

Contents

History

Krishnagiri was formed as the 30th district by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It was carved out of Dharmapuri district on 9 February 2004. Government College of Engineering was started in the then Dharmapuri district in 1994. It started functioning in two of the buildings in Government Polytechnic campus, Krishnagiri from 9-11-1994. Presently the college is affiliated to Anna University. As an extensive area measuring 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land in Madepalli village on NH46, 4 km west from Bargur was acquired for the college. A sum of RS.7.85 crores has been spent on the construction of the following buildings:

Administrative Block, Electronics and Communication Engineering Block, Electrical and Electrical Engineering Block, Computer Science Engineering Block, Mechanical Engineering Block, Library Block and Hostel for Boys and Girls.

The college started functioning at the new premises from 05-July-2000.

Presently the college is affiliated to Anna University.

The Government College of Engineering (GCE) Bargur, Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, India, is youngest of the six Government Engineering Colleges in the State of Tamil Nadu coexisting with nearly 225 private engineering colleges.

Location

It was started on 9 September 1994 and housed temporarily in 2 buildings [1] of the Government Polytechnic, Krishnagiri. It was later shifted in July 2000 [2] to its own 50-acre (200,000 m2) campus in Bargur, located at latitude = 12.548°, longitude =78.334° on a beautiful site surrounded by hills on the National Highway 46 (NH46) about 10 km East from Krishnagiri and between Vaniyambadi and Krishnagiri.

Affiliation

The college was originally affiliated to the University of Madras. From 1998-99 it was affiliated to the newly started Periyar University. In 2002-03 it became a constituent college of Anna University which is a state wide Centralized Engineering University. Recently (Jan 2007), a bill has been introduced in Tamil Nadu State Assembly to retake the administration of the college while retaining its affiliation to Anna University.

This is the sixth and youngest Government Engineering Institution in Tamil Nadu. The first batch of undergraduate students passed out in the academic year 1998-99 in EEE and ECE. Later CSE and Mechanical branches were introduced.

Facilities

Internet Facilities: All the departments have been provided with separate internet amenities with the help of VSAT connections.

Hostels: There are two separate hostels for boys and girls offering a residential accommodation for 600 students.

Auditorium and Conference Hall: The college crowns an auditorium with a capacity of 300 students. It is also equipped with the latest LCD display & projectors. A few quarters are also inside the campus for staff of this college.

Nearby Educational Institutions

Admission to the college is based on the performance in the State higher secondary school examinations; in the case of CBSE students, admission is based on the combined performances in the competitive Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE) and their higher secondary school examinations. Other Educational Institutions nearby are the IRTT Polytechnic College run by the Institute of Road and Transport Technology and the Government Women's Arts and Science College on the eastern outskirts of Bargur.

Industries, agriculture and commerce in and around college

The Tamil Nadu Minerals Ltd (TAMIN), an undertaking of the state of Tamil Nadu has its one of its two granite factories built at a cost of Rs. 6.5 crores, almost opposite Government College of Engineering Bargur. Many other private granite small scale factories are located at krishnagiri 10 km from the engineering college. Since the entire district of Krishnagiri (erstwhile Dharmapuri District) is famous for its "Malgova" Mangoe fruits, many food processing industries also abound in Bargur, with one such factory right opposite to engineering college. The other important agricultural product grown in Bargur is tamarind. The incredibly high multicrore turnover clothing retail market (about 500 shops) housed in a single building is also located in Bargur.
